Novel Editing

Do you need an editor for your novel?

First of all, congratulations on finishing it. Writing a novel, in itself, is a great accomplishment. Whether you dream of traditional publication, intend to self-publish your novel or want to hand it down through your family, editing is imperative. You need a fresh perspective, from a professional editor, to analyse your novel for tension, readability, plot holes, ambiguity, confusion and continuity.

An editor will also proofread your work and look for things like spelling and punctuation errors, inconsistencies, awkward sentences and waffle. I usually work on all kinds of editing at once - structural, comprehesive and proofreading. If I need to work in multiple rounds, my authors are usually happy to pay for my time to go through a second, third or even a fourth time.

This helps us work together, so that the author’s work between drafts does not introduce new errors that are not picked up. Whether you want me to do one round, or multiple, I am keen to edit your novel.

What genres do you like to edit?

I am open minded and keen to edit novels of all kinds, except for horror. I love to edit:

  • Children’s and young adult novels
  • Fantasy novels, especially high fantasy, epic fantasy and urban fantasy
  • Science fiction, including alternative history and space operas
  • Speculative fiction
  • Historical fiction
  • Adventure novels
  • Crime, spy and thriller novels
  • Contemporary fiction / drama
  • Paranormal romance
  • Romance and erotica

Why choose Amanda Greenslade as your editor

I am the author of seven books and I am a long-standing member of the Queensland Writers Centre. I have been involved in editing and proofreading since 2006. I was one of the editors involved in the online speculative fiction magazine, The Specusphere, as a young adult. I own and operate Australian eBook Publisher, which has published around a thousand books for people online since 2011. We were the first specialist ebook publishing house in Australia!

My authors have often commented that I have a fantastic grasp on the big picture of a novel, weeding out plot holes and suggesting ways to improve their book. Sometimes a different perspective is all you need to consider a new way of conveying something about one of your characters or the story you are trying to tell.

As far as details go, I am also very details oriented. You can check out the free online style guide I created to get an idea of some of the things I look for when editing books and other kinds of text. Go to www.editoraustralia.com

While I don’t guarantee to eliminate 100% of the errors in one round, I would advise you to be wary of an editor who does. The more rounds I do the less errors there will be. Furthermore, I have proofreaders on staff who can take up the mantle and offer you a a fresh pair of eyes, if you want that.

I can’t wait to hear all about your novel. Please contact me via email as I do have a day job as well as running my business.

How much does editing a novel cost?

I don’t have a one-size-fits-all price for editing, as it depends on the amount of problems it contains. Instead, I offer a free sample edit. This will provide you with a small section of your novel edited using Microsoft Word’s tracked changes tool. This way you can decide if you like me editing style, and I can run some maths (not my favourite subject in school!) to work out how long I think it will take to edit the entire novel.
